Event: Official Inauguration of the Green One UN House

Venue: 304 Kim Ma Street, Hanoi

Xin Chao

Good morning!

On behalf of the UN Country Team and our staff in Viet Nam it is my great honour to warmly welcome all of you, I am particularly honored to welcome:

Excellency Secretary General of the United Nations, Mr. Ban Ki Moon and Mrs Ban Soon-Taek;

Excellency Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mr Pham Binh Minh and Mrs. Nga

Honorable Representatives from the Hanoi People's Committee and government officials

Excellencies Ambassadors;

And our development partners

Exactly 851 days ago some of us had gathered at this very spot for the groundbreaking to begin construction of the Green One UN House.

On that very cold day, back in January 2013, UNCT had little idea of the magnitude of the challenges that lay ahead of us!

But as UN family we stood together to realize our vision.

Of course, however excited we were then, it cannot possibly match the level of excitement and pride that we feel today.

On this auspicious occasion, we couldn't be more delighted that the UN Secretary General is here with us together with the Deputy Prime Minister.

The seed for this project was sown long before the start of construction.

I am especially grateful to my predecessors, the UN Resident Coordinators Jordan Ryan, John Hendra and the UNCTs that served in Viet Nam over the past 10 years for their important role in bringing us to this day.

The Green One UN House has been a core element of UN reforms in Viet Nam, and this intension became reality with the strong political commitment expressed in the Prime Ministerial decree issued in September 2009.

So today we are not just inaugurating a building, but are also launching the sixth pillar of the Delivering as One approach in Viet Nam which will help the UN both to Deliver as One and to Deliver Green.

The House has been designed to break down barriers between UN Agencies to help deliver on cross sectoral results.

Staff will be clustered according to their functions rather than by the Agency that they work for. This is an ambitious and bold step forward by any UN Country Team in the world.

But we could not have done this without the strong leadership of the Government, in particular MOFA, MPI and the Hanoi People's Committee and I would like to thank them for all their material contribution and collaboration.

I would like to also acknowledge the support of the donors, especially for the financial contribution provided by Australia, Finland, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Switzerland and the UK.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge the relentless efforts of the UNCT and staff; our headquarters and regional offices, in making the Green One UN House a reality.

Last, but not the least, I would also like to thank our technical experts and construction partners.

Excellencies and distinguished guests, your presence at this inauguration means a lot to the UN family in Viet Nam and I would like to once again thank you all for joining us today.

Xin Cam On!! Thank you!!!
