Name:Taking a Value Chain Approach towards Local Economic Development and Women’s Economic Empowerment
Description:

This study focuses on the sericulture value chain in Quy Chau district of Nghe An province in Viet Nam. It shows how strengthening the sericulture value chain contributed to economic empowerment of women and their negotiation power, increased income and employment opportunities in rural area, and preservation of the environment and local ethnic minority traditions.

Strengthening a value chain requires various technical expertise specific to the type of businesses as well as to different steps of the value chain. The case study shows how the complementary and comparative expertise of five UN agencies, including FAO, ILO, UNIDO, UNCTAD and the International Trade Centre, contributes to a bigger social impact.
