Description:Viet Nam has been one of the hardest hit countries by Avian Influenza. The first outbreak in both the avian and human populations was reported at the end of 2003 and the government of Viet Nam officially declared the presence of avian influenza on 8 January 2004. Since then, the virus has spread through bird populations in almost every city and province in Viet Nam. The country’s fatality rate for AI infection is one of the highest in the region.

Public awareness and behavior change communication have been a vital and cross-cutting component of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI or AI) control since the outbreaks began in 2003. Public awareness and BCC has also been identified as a crucial component in the Government’s policy framework to combat HPAI. It particularly formed a key and successful component of work in Phase I of the Joint Programme which led to the continuation of the component in the second phase of 2006-2010. Two major communication campaigns were launched by the Joint Programme during the pre-TET periods of 2005-2006 and 2006-2007, which included TV spots, radio/public address system messages, street posters, pamphlets, supply kits and newspaper inserts.  This report presents findings and recommendations of the review of the existing logistics and distribution network of AI IEC materials for further improvement of the distribution system in both non-outbreak and outbreak situations.
